In an effort to highlight the extreme importance and influence of mental skills in sport, sport performance psychologist Dr. John F. Murray (http://www.JohnFMurray.com) has rated all the playoffs games with his Mental Performance Index (or MPI) leading up to each of the past three Super Bowl games (2003, 2004, and 2005). He has spoken about the index scores in the national media before the game to announce the "actual performance" of the teams (including mental factors) entering the Big Game. In each instance, the MPI has been proven extremely accurate, contrary to the public opinon and beating the official spread each year. These ratings will continue to be provided annually as a way to educate coaches, media and fans about the importance of often neglected mental factors in football (and other sports).
